Squawktalk meeting: Jan 30 It was a cold rainy night out but we had a warm fun time. We discussed the direction for our club. As a group very concerned with the heath & welfare of our companions we will be holding the veterinarian community to a higher standard of care. We had 2 wondereful vets at this meeting providing great answers & support. At the next meeting we plan on making toys, as well as discussing & sharing ideas for safe fun toys. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Fly-in at the Jackson County Airport: Nov 14It was a promotion for the local airport and what is more fitting than to have true fliers! An opportunity to reach more of the community while supporting the airport & a great local magazine "Living Jackson". We spent the day talking with local & not so local residence about the wonders of flying and the wonder of these beautiful parrots. All were amazed at the beauty of these birds & more amazed by the amount of care, the high cost & the social requirements of keeping one as a companion. One pilot made the comment "they are as expensive as owning a dang plane!" It is a successful day if we provide just a little information to just one person. On this day we we provided more than just a little information to a lot of people. ________________________________________________________________________________________ ![]() ![]() ![]() Art in the Park at Hurricane Shoals: Sept 19 & 20 The rain didn't scare the visitors from this fun event. Thanks to everyone who donated to our birds & stopped by to visit. While Lola made a huge statement with her size & color on Saturday, Hansom pleased the crowds with his antics & vocabulary on Sunday. We enjoyed the opportunity to provide information about companion birds & encourage anyone with birds or interested in birds to call or join our club. A special thanks to Linda & Linda for all their help. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Bird visit to Athens Montessori school; July 15 '09 SORRY: no pictures We received a call asking if we would bring a few birds & talk with the kids. ABSOLUTELY. We took 6 birds and had a great time talking about birds as pets. We touched on a few other issues including smuggling, how long lived parrots are and what happens to them when owners die. This was a very well behaved and attentive young group that enjoyed time on the floor with a cockatoo and gave some nice head scrunches to a macaw. This Montessori group also donated dozens & dozens of rolls of much needed paper towels to "no-"R"-birds" sanctuary. We thank them for their generosity! ![]() ![]() Lyndon House youth weeks: June 3rd & 10th. We presented parrots in the wild vs: captivity in an informal discussion that included habitat destruction, ecology, smuggling & reproduction challenges. These young people were studying South America and got to participate in a rare and intimate experience with parrots. _______________________________________________________________________________________ UP COMING EVENTS for 2010: resume in 2010 Thursday is for the birds at Bentley Assisted Living at Northminster.
